Overview — What is Ledger and why it matters
This presentation walks you through powering on a Ledger device, installing Ledger Live, creating or restoring a wallet, and following best security practices. Ledger hardware wallets store private keys offline to protect your crypto assets from online threats.
Quick checklist
- Unbox only purchased-from-official channels.
- Download Ledger Live from the official website.
- Never share your recovery phrase with anyone.
- Keep firmware and apps updated via Ledger Live.
Getting started — Step-by-step
Unbox & inspect
Confirm the seal and packaging. Ledger products should be purchased from Ledger Shop or trusted resellers only.
Download Ledger Live
Visit https://ledger.com/ledger-live
and download the correct version for your OS. Ledger Live is the official desktop/mobile companion app used to manage accounts and install device apps.
Initialize device
Follow on-screen prompts to set a device PIN, then write down the recovery phrase on the provided card. This recovery phrase (seed phrase) is the only backup for your funds — store it offline.
Install apps
Use Ledger Live's Manager to install coin-specific apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Each app consumes space on the device but can be reinstalled anytime via Ledger Live.
Security best practices (h4-h5 examples)
Keep your recovery phrase offline
Write it on the supplied recovery sheet and store in a secure location — possible options include a safe or split-shared custody with trusted parties.
Never share private keys
Ledger staff will never ask for your recovery phrase or private keys. If someone asks, treat it as a scam and report it immediately.
Troubleshooting
If something doesn't match the instructions, stop and verify the source. Use official support pages before attempting advanced fixes.
Common issues
- Device not recognized: try a different cable or USB port and ensure Ledger Live is updated.
- Unable to install app: free up space on the device via Ledger Live Manager.
- Forgot PIN: you will need to reset the device and restore from recovery phrase.
Advanced tips
For power users: consider using passphrase-supported accounts (also called 25th word) for additional account segregation; however, note that passphrases must be remembered — losing one can cause permanent loss of access.
Legal & safety notes
Ledger provides software and hardware but does not have access to your funds. Review terms on the official site and keep your firmware updated to the latest release to maintain security enhancements.
